What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

It is important that I find a magazine publisher that can handle demands of a mass audience and who is familiar with rock pop music. This is important to me because I want the magazine to be distributed correctly and by somebody who know what they are doing; which is why I would prefer a distribution that has has experience.

A magazine publisher that I feel is a good example for my magazine is IPC (International Publishing Corporation). The reason I chose this publishing house was because I decided to research the relevant magazines that were similar to mine, to see who publishes their magazines. I looked at NME; the reason for this is because I feel that it is similar to my magazine by the genre of music and TA. Their publishing house was IPC, after looking at the details of the publishing house, I decided to use this as an example. I felt comfortable with this publishing house because NME uses it and doest seem to have has any major problems. Here are some images of NME covers:

I have also been thinking about where I want my magazine distributed and where i would like it sold. Businesses such as WHsmith, Top supermarkets, HMV etc. I chose the supermarkets because many people go looking around the magazine section o see what there is; also there is a range of age range. This could mean that it could attract a older audience. HMV, I feel is one of the main places to go for music. All of the best magazines will be sold there and I think that it would attract a larger audience.

I feel that if I decided to chose IPC, I will have a good deal and will not have any problems. With a very successful magazine using this publishing house, makes you a lot more confident about choosing them.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

In my text it is mainly aimed at the younger generation, even though I did aim to have it general age. I feel that in the text, I have represented the younger generation positively. I would have to say that this magazine would probably not attract 'grebs', metal fans etc. because that music is much louder. Artists such as Slipnot would be appropriate for 'grebs'. This is not to say that 'Grebs' and anyone else can not read the magazine, it just gives a overview at who may like and who may not. Even though I feel that younger generation (teenagers) were represented positively, it was unintentional. I know that when I portray people in a certain way without meaning to is a unintentional signifier. Luckily my preferred reading for them to be portrayed positively.

Different social groups:

Some of these may not be in UK; I chose these because the magazine could be distributed internationally.

  • Jocks
  • populars
  • Geeks
  • Grebs
  • Rich
  • Poor
Even though Rich and poor may not be a social group name; many people stick to people who have money; likewise for the poorer people. These are just a few; the ones above are mainly teenage years, this is because as you get older I don't think there are 'clicks' like the ones in school. I just feel that a lot of people concentrate on money. I mean to be honest, who would go and hang about with a homeless person? I don't think people mean it as discrimination but it is not the up bringing that many people have to be around, even though they could be very kind people. This is why I produced this magazine, I want people to be able to have a common interest, whether they have a difference in what they dress or hang out with.

My magazine is aimed at a audience of many ages, I feel now looking back at the magazine, it was very 'girly'. the artists were girls. If a girl picked up a magazine then I feel that they would be more likely to buy it then a male. On the other hand, some Male's like to have women on the front of the magazine; most of the time, I would say that the female on he front attracts many different people. Overall the magazine cover does seem to have it positives and negatives. Also the colours of the magazine are plain and dark, this means that it attracts the different gender.

I tried to add difficult articles such as 'what would you do without music'. This may not seem like the most exciting article ever but it can attract people by seeing others opinions. There would have also been a chance to write in and express their own opinion. I feel this is good because then it makes the magazine seem much more personal than others. For the layout of the double page spread I decided to keep it simple and stick to a simple column; this could be represented as boring. I wanted to keep it nice and simple and concentrate on the image and text. I am happy with the layout overall, just a few slight changes would have been made.

I wanted to use colours of the magazine that would attract both genders. For my magazine cover the main colours are black, grey and white. These are all neutral colours, so they should attract both male and female. The same for the contents page there is brown. one of the brown is light; this could uncover a problem because it could come across to soft and 'girly'. For the DPS, I think I made a a mistake in the colours. the colours are a lot lighter and have a hint of pink. I feel that this is a no no when trying to attract both genders. Although if I did want to attract just women, I feel that the colours would be appropriate for this magazine.

In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms of conventions of real life media products?

My magazine is different to this existing text by NME because of the layout and text. I am happy with the image, as I feel that it looks as professional as an image from a NME magazine. Some points that I would suggest are not so good are the text. I have added a little bit of text on the page and it looks quite bare and clear. The NME text all works well together and stands out without using bold bright colours. The masthead is very large and stands out which attracts the reader a lot more than what my personal magazine does. I know that I am not a professional and I would find it very challenging to even get my magazine as good as this one but it shows the difference from someone who is creative and someone who may not be as much.

The similar things about this magazine are the font; the two magazines don’t have the same but they both keep to the same font in the magazine. They both also have a different font for the masthead which stands out further. The image is different; a close up attracts the reader to the face of the artists more than what mine does. The audience are more likely to look around the background in my image because there is a lot of empty space. The two magazines both have the text on the left and right to keep the image the centre of attention. The NME magazine has very neat columns of text which makes the magazine look tidier and professional, whereas my magazine doesn’t have text in a neat column. This makes the magazine look untidy.  I tried to add my own element by adding two different colours to the masthead. I haven’t seen any magazine that has this yet and I think I can understand why. Has much as I think it looks ‘ok’ it doesn’t do much. The masthead is not screaming out at you, which is what I would like. I would want somebody to look at the magazine and remember the magazine. From the survey I decided to add some of the artists that were preferred by my target audience.

These are DPS for NME and my target audience. Again they have used large writing to give the reader an insight to what this magazine will be about. The colours for NME DPS were a mixture of 3 colours; black, white and red. I am happy with my DPS since I feel that it is nice a simple; the colour makes it stand out and become quite summery. I think an improvement would be making the DPS look more musical. The layout of the DPS is different because mine is in a block; it is all in one neat paragraph. The NME magazine has used a few of columns. The text is also a lot smaller than mine, so you can fit a lot more information in it. The main part in this DPS is the image which is what the reader is instantly drawn into. The text in these two different texts are very different, the NME DPS has different types of text which makes the page look a lot more exciting. Whereas my music magazine has the same font because I knew that it would look better with different fonts but I just didn’t know how to work them together. I thought that instead of ruining it with a couple of different fonts.

These are the contents of NME and my contents page. The NME magazine is full of lots of information about what is in the magazine. As you can see this magazine is a lot bigger that what mine is. This is a negative on my side because people buy a magazine which has a lot of information in it, not one that has a few ages. There are a few images of the NME contents page which is about different things. Most things which attract the reader are the pictures; the audience like to visually see what they are reading about. My contents page has one image and that is the same person that is on every page, even though it is different images. The NME has an index on the side of all of the bands which are in the magazine. This is good compared to mine because they can quickly see whether there favourite band has been added to this magazine and find the page. Also on the contents page they have a small story. This is different to mine because I don’t reveal what the stories are about. This is good because it gives a hint of mystery about what may be in this magazine. Some people like surprises some don’t; I need to take that into consideration. NME has used a few colours; red, white, black and yellow. These colours are use so that the reader is drawn into the important parts of the magazine. My contents page has two different shades of brown. This is good to keep it simple and to keep it matching it with the image, but sometimes making something stand out I important and this does not happen.

Looking back at your Pleminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

During this whole experience of making the magazine from scratch, I have realised what goes into making a fully functional magazine. While carrying out this task, I learnt many more skills and used them to my full advantage while constructing this magazine. Since this was an individual magazine, I was in charge of everything that had to been done. Images, text, editing etc. These were all examples of just some of the things that we has to do while creating this magazine. The roles that we had to take on for ourselves, which would normally be done my one person fro each were:

  • Editor-in-chief
  • Associate Editor
  • Advertising manager
  • Business manager
  • Circulation manager
  • Design Editor / Art Director
Some parts of a magazine were not on mine; this is the reason why some of the roles would not have been carried out by me, such as the person who gets all competitions ready. It would not have been possible to carry out every role in the magazine industry, but I feel that the roles that I did take on were challenging enough to learn a lot.

Now looking back at the work that I did on my preliminary task, I have noticed a huge difference in the way that I did work to the way that I work now. Before I only had only the picture of a magazine; anything that was on the front I wanted to add to mine. What I didn't realise was that there was so much more that I could use and that I didn't have to go for the template of an 'ordinary' magazine. From looking at different magazine artists such as Ray gun. When I first saw his magazines I was not sure about what they were for and how he edited these images. I then learnt how to edit a photograph to make it look better. I used Pixlr to edit many of my draft photos; this then made then look much better. Here is an example:

I feel that from this first image to this edited image, I feel that the image looks much better. Before the image is edited it looked very unprofessional. The editing is not perfect but it does look much better than the first image. Here is my Preliminary task magazine and my final magazine cover.

From looking at these two magazines you can see such a massive difference; the first magazine, which is on the left.as the word 'sound', this suggests to the reader that this is a music magazine. The masthead's are completely different; the first magazine is more of a title rather than a masthead. The other magazine has a much bigger masthead and this stands out to the reader, it also h I am happy with for my first attempt, I would just say that I used too much colour. I feel that this magazine looks a lot more childlike than what it is meant to be. My final magazine page has a lot less colour, it all fits in well together and there is just not any random and any unwanted pieces of text or colours. The image is much bigger in the final magazine; I like that because it draws the attention away from any space that doesn't look great there. In my Preliminary task, I think I made the mistake of trying to fill every gap that there was so that it didn't look empty. Now looking back at the magazine I think that I could of put less information and it could of still looked good. I can see the amount of improvement that has been made and I am very pleased with the end result. Working in nearly every role of the magazine I feel has been challenging but rewarding as well.

Looking back over magazines

From looking at the beginning where I was going my Pleminary task and then my music magazine drafts I can see a really improvement in all areas. Doing this task was a challenge because we had to take on all of the roles that goes into a professional magazine.

I am happy with the first magazine but I knew I could do better for the final task with more practise:

This is my Draft of my Front page; you can see that it is much different to the first magazine. From comparing them both, I feel that the first magazine was still better. But that is how I learnt about what was good and what was bad:

This is my draft of my contents page; I feel that the page looked boring and quite simple. I didn't want it to look like I had just threw it together:

This is my final draft or my DPS. I was happy with the images but they were too small and he writing was taking up too much space:

Final Contents page

Final Contents page

This is my final contents page for my contents page. I am happy with the layout with it because it is not too busy. The colour of the brown because it is neutral and keeps the page subtle. From my first magazine I can see many improvements. My doing the drafts I was able to see the progress I made and also come up with new ideas.

Final magazine

This is my final magazine. I decided to change the image and the masthead name as i thought that it didn't seem relevant to music. As soon as you look at the masthead you can instantly tell that this magazine is about music and that the image on the front must be able music. i was saying from my last magazine that I wanted it to look professional and I now think that I have finally achieved that. The background is darker which takes up a lot of free space that I am not going to use. Since I looked at the layout of some other magazines such as NME, I saw how they layed out some of their text. I noticed that they had kept their text to one side to keep it looking neat and tidy. I definitely prefer the image as it suite the magazine much more and also makes it look much more unisex than the one before.

Final DPS

Final DPS

This is my Final DPS for my music magazine; I decided to use different images than what I did before as I thought that they were much better quality and the whole image fit well. I decided to go for light colours because it gives the image and all the smaller details a chance to stand out. The reason I chose the brown was because it went with the wood from the image and the overall colours. I am happy with the outcome of this DPS and find that from the two drafts it is a lot better.

Front cover draft 3

Final Front Cover

This is my final front cover of my music magazine; I like this a lot compared to the second draft. The fact that I have put too much on the cover makes other parts of the magazine stand out, such as the masthead and image. I would not usually go for a masthead that had two different colours because I would not of thought that it would have worked well together. As experimenting I feel that it works well and makes the masthead stand out more. Overall I am pleased with the improvement that I have made and feel that from the first magazine to the last there is definitely a better outcome. I decided to go for Black, Blue and White as my colour scheme. This is because the Black and White work well together and can sometimes look a bit plain but by adding the blue from the dress in the image and the text it makes the whole page stand out.

Images taken for magazine

Images taken for magazine

For my images I decided to take a range so that I could edit them how I wanted and so that I had a range to choose from. I used Pixlr to edit the images so that I could make them as effective as possible.

This image is one of my favourites because it has the guitar as the only piece of colour. By making it stand out from the whole image it pulls the person from the dull background. I wanted to have a image which was a mixture of colour and black and white which would compliment each other. As the guitar will be standing out I decided to make the only other piece of colour; the nails. I like this edit and have used it in my work.

This is another of one of my favourite images because it works without having colour.Because of the detail from the image it has many things which stand out. I chose this image because it seems a lot more natural with the models looking down instead of looking at the camera.

This is the same image as above but with colour. I still edited it by making the image brighter than it was. Instead of having black and white I wanted an image that was inviting and summery. I like this image because it has been edited to make it brighter and it compliments the image well.

Final Draft Contents Page

This is my Final contents page. I am happy with the layout as I just wanted to keep it simple. I have a couple different pictures of people who are a part of my DPS. Instead of going over the top with the layout I just wanted to keep the design relaxed so that it would be for one easier to read. I like the background colour and it brings the page to life without being over powering. Overall I am really happy with this design.

Final Draft of Front page

This is my Final draft of my Front cover. I decided to again stick to a colour scheme; red, black and white. Comparing this to my draft I feel that this is much better overall. I didn't want to cover the front page with a lot of information because I thought that it only needed to be put in the contents page. I decided to have my DPS story on the front cover, which would draw the reader into the massive picture on the front. As well as having the bigger stores I also added a competition at the bottom and a small story at the top. I added the normal small information such as the barcode and Issue to make this magazine seem more life like for the reader. I am happy with the overall look of the magazine as I took inspiration from many magazines. I know there are improvements but I am pleased with the outcome.

Final Draft of DPS

This is my Final DPS; I decided to not go with the same layout as my draft as I didn't think it was that interesting. Since I had wrote quite a lot I did struggle to fit it all on which made my pictures a bit smaller than I had planned. I am happy with the pictures that I took and I am happy with the editing that I did on them. I know that there are areas where I could improve and areas which I have improved anyway. Because I didn't have the most exciting layout I decided to try and make the images more presentable which is the reason for the Frame around all of them. I looked at other music magazines such as NME to get some inspiration of layout, colours etc. I have tried to stick to a colour scheme of Blue, White and grey. I felt that if I had used Black it would of ruined the look of the magazine and make it look quite serious. I know there are definitely areas which I could improve but I have tried to take the feedback from my last drafts and other ideas into consideration to produce this piece of work which I have now.

DPS Draft

This is the draft of my DPS. I decided to go for a simple layout and I have not given my self much space for information. I didn't edit this image but when I do my image for the final magazine I will edit it. I gave this DPS  a green background because of the green in the image. I again decided to stay with 3 colours as the colour scheme; with one brighter and bolder, which is the green. I am happy with the layout; I purposely made the margin line diagonal because I felt that if I left it straight it may look 'boring'.

I have the same font as the font page; I chose this because it is bold and stands out but it is also easy to read, which is very important. I am happy with the draft overall and it has given me some ideas on what I will use for my final magazine. It has also shown me what I should not add into the magazine.

Here is an example of a Double page spread, this one is from NME. The similarities from these are the layout. both of the images are on the left and cover half of the page. I cannot comment on the image as it is not my own and the quality of it, is not down to me. A difference of the Double page spread is the font. the one below has a bold and detailed masthead which is what the reader concentrates on. the good thing about the magazine is that they have made the mast head look interesting by having a mixture of two different fonts. These two DPS I feel are personally to similar and I am not able to judge my draft properly.

Here are some other examples of Double Page Spreads (DPS) from NME.

The layout of the writing for these magazines are different from the other two because they have made the article more interesting by adding more pictures, which will always intrigue the reader. The font is a mixture of different fonts. All of the different fonts have a different effect on the text. I want to use a mixture of different text because it can make other words stand out more than others. The title is in a large but plain font; I would want my text like this because their is no confusion for the reader. The explanation about the group is under the massive quote. This is good because it is there for the readers that are interested and it doesn't bore the readers who may not be interested. This specific article is a lot bigger than the others because it is the main story of the magazine; it is mainly what draws the reader it; that is why it has to be eye capturing and interesting.Te way this article has been set out is not what I am going to want for my magazine but it has given me some good ideas for my DPS.

Front cover draft

This is a draft of the music magazine that I would like to produce. From looking over other magazines I noticed that they all had a colour scheme of 3 colours. One of which was a bolder and brighter colour which is the reason for the purple. For the real magazine I would add more information on other bands, which would make it look more inviting. At the moment the magazine looks much for a female audience which is not the case. When I have my image and the replies from my questionnaire then I will be able to work out an appropriate colour for both male and female.

I called the music magazine 'Relevance' because all of the music that is in the magazine is relevant to the reader, the charts etc. I don't normally like adding big circle and shapes on the page because I feel it can make it look messy and this could make it look worse. I am happy with the draft and it has given me ideas for what I would like for the proper magazine and it has shown me what I shouldn't do.

These are a few examples of NMEs front covers; they are all different but with on similarity. The title's and the colour scheme always has red. I like the way the image is always big and is the main part of the front cover. Whether there are 1,2,3 or more; it is relatively always a close up. This shows the reader that it is an important part of the magazine and it most likely the main story. As you can see there is a big difference between my magazine and theirs. I wanted to stick to a 3 colour, colour scheme but I feel that because their quite dark colours they have not worked as well as I would like them to.

Health and safety

As I am taking a picture which may not be during lesson I will need to make sure that I am aware of health and safety.

If I am going outside of school I need to think of certain factors before and during the process of taking the photos:

  • Make sure that the area that I am taking my photo in is safe; by this I mean no glass, rubbish or anything like that is arounf you because that could cause injury to any of us.
  • I need to make sure that we am in a safe area so that we feel comfortable to get the best picture possible without feeling worried about the environment around us.
  • When handling the camera I need to make sure that I am holding it correctly and make sure I have a safety cord on it; this is just in case for any reason the camera comes out from my hand.
  • Depending on where the photo is being taken, I need to make sure that all of us have the correct clothing on.
If I am taking a picture in school then I need to make sure that:
  • Make sure before any photos are took I need to make sure that the area of work is safe for everyone to use and if not then make sure that I do not go into that area.
  • If am taking pictures in a safe environment so that there is risk to any of us; by making sure there is nothing we could slip on, such as a wet floor.
  • Make sure that we are all wearing appropriate clothing so that know one has a risk of injuring themselves.
  • I need to make sure that there are no lose cables on the floor of anywhere, which any of us could trip over.
  • In some class rooms there are moveable lights an these are quite low; we need to be careful that none of us bang our heads on them but also reduce the risk of having it fall on anyone.

Second edit of photograph

Here is another example of how I edited this photograph. There are parts that I would change but as a first go I am very happy with it.
The main thing that stands out in this image is the background, which is full of colour. I didn't want to take the attention away from the wall but I thought that the band needed something to stand them out.  I changed all of the band members into Black and white because I feel that having no colour can be as good as having lots of colour.

If I changed the image I would only change one or two of the band members black and white so that it wasn't equal. Having everything equal can sometimes look dull; having random areas of colour can make the front cover look even more interesting.

Magazine edit for green day - Pixlr

Last lesson we used Pixlr to design a ruff copy of how to edit a image. I needed to copy an image and make a duplicate of it, this is so I could edit it. I then made my background image coloured and the top layer black and white. By having the image edited  it changes the look of the image and can make it look better than the original.

A band like Green day does not need all of their name shown because they are such a popular band that the colour of the text and the ruff outline of the text shows the audience/reader exactly who this person is.This is the original image; as you can see there is a big difference between them. With the original image you would have to know what the band looks like to be able to spot this image and know them. The other image stands out straight away to the reader and automatically they know who this is. Green day is such as popular band that you don't have to listen to them to know the name of the band.

Rock pop bands

All of these groups are pop rock bands. The styles and music are both similar. This is the style of bands that I want to have featured in my magazine. There are girl bands which have a genre of rock and pop but I feel that men are the main target audience of group that I am looking for. I don't personally have a preference of the gender of the reader, but just for the gender of the groups in my magazine.

Ray Gun Deconstruction

This magazine cover is by Ray Gun, his magazines are not always the easiest to read or to understand but they stand out by being unique and distinctive. Ray Guns last issue was in 2000 after a number of different magazine issues. Here is an example of one of Ray Guns magazine issue.

I like this magazine because it is different from what you normally see and every issue is different in its own way. One thing that Ray Gun does a lot is use the masthead to project his name to the audience. If you read a lot of Ray Guns magazines then you wouldn't need his name at the top because you would be able to spot his uniqueness from just a glance.

Ray Gun has left his colours to the absolute minimum which makes this magazine stand out more. Normally when you only use plain colours the magazine does not stand out which is why Ray Gun is clever because he proves the opposite. The main two colours from this magazine are Black and White which definitely works well. There are a couple of other colours which stand out, the red from the lips and the brown from the wall also stand out a lot more than it would normally of the loss of colour on the magazine.

As well as none of the magazines being the same, the text is also very different; the whole font from this magazine is consistent until the end which is too small to see. The text is also in white and has been filled in; different letters have been filled in which give it another think to catch your attention with and make you forget about how empty this magazine cover actually is.

I like this magazine because it shows that you just have to be a bit clever on the colours, fonts etc. that you use and you can make a magazine look busy enough without adding heaps of information to the cover.

Target audience

This is my picture of my target audience.
I have chosen this picture because this is what I picture the target audience to be. Since my genre of music is pop/rock, the style of the audience will differ. When I think of rock I think about skinny jeans, converse etc. and when I think about pop I think of skirts, shorts, 'girly' outfits as a type of stereotype. As this outfit has a mixture of the two it shows how you can put these two styles together to make a specific target audience for my music magazine. I know that this is not the style of what everyone in my target audience will wear but this is an example of how you can mix the two types of genre of music together and make it suit each.

This person is a young girl who has a strong taste for different music but has a particular favourite of hers which is rock/pop. She has put on a skirt and a plain top which looks smart and this shows that she has made an effort. By adding the converse the outfit turns slightly casual but also having the smart look. This person has been clever in keeping the outfit smart, but by also adding her personality into the look. This look would be good for a concert because it is quick and simple. The shoes that this person has decided to wear shows that she has common sense because by wearing converse she will keep her feet comfortable and dry depending on the weather.

I don't have a particular target audience that I am wanting to read my magazine because the range of music and groups that are involved in rock/pop are so different that you cannot expect a certain type. I chose this person to image because they show an example of what my target audience could look like and how they could style their outfit. Obviously most people who are part of my target audience will read music magazines and will be interested to find out more about a certain group and see whether they are getting anything new out.

Of course I have a view of what they reader may look like and that is what I am basing my target audience mostly on, mostly I want my target audience to have a strong interest into music magazines and interested to find out more about their favourite band or win competitions. Everyone has there opinion on what there target audience 'should' look like but most of the time it is not what you think.

Different thoeries in the media

In today's lesson we learnt about the uses and gratification theory and the hypodermic needle theory. Here are my notes on these different theories.

Uses and gratification theory
This theory focuses more on what people do with the media other than what the media does to them. Instead of giving them a message it focuses on the audience and the audience.

The theory assumes that people work media into their life which gives them gratification. Instead of people trying to use different types of media because they feel they should use it because someone is telling them to, this theory suggests that we choose the types of media that best suite are needs. If somebody wants something done then they will use the media to fulfil their needs at that time. The media is not used for everything but when it is needed it is easier to fulfil those needs.

This theory suggests that when you choose a form of media it will fulfil one of those needs:
  • Identify- 'being able to recognise the product or person in front of you, role models that reflect similar values to yours, aspiration, knowledge and understanding'
  • Educate- 'Being able to acquire information, knowledge and understanding'
  • Entertain- 'What are you consuming should give you enjoyment and also some form of 'escapism' enabling us to target our worries temporarily'
  • Social interaction- 'The ability for media products to produce a topic of conversation between other people, sparks debates (etc. who is left on the x-factor)'
Different types of media such as music is a way that we can fulfil our needs by listening to the music that we want to listen to. Now that we have the Internet we are able to look things up quickly bu using search engines such as Google. There are many different websites on many different subjects such as Wikipedia and YouTube which both have different uses. Now that the media is being improved we are now able to speak to people quickly over the Internet using social networks such as Facbook an Twitter etc.

My views on this theory is that I agree with it. If somebody was wanting to find out who is the latest boy band then they can go on the Internet and find out this. By finding out this information it can fulfil your needs. I got my information from this website:

http://www.slideshare.net/zlorhenley/uses-and-gratification-theory-6933502

Here is my demographic audience:

  • Socio-economic grouping
  • Age
  • Gender
  • Ethnicity
  • Lifestyle - For example my aspirations are to get to university and get the job that I wanted for many years. Places I go on holiday at the moment are America, canada, italy. I am able to go on holidays like this because of my parents. When I am older I would like to be able to afford to go to places like this.
Every one is placed into a group for Social-ecomonic grouping. The groups are A, B, C1, C2, D, E.

A- Social class - upper class / type of job - higher managerial, administrative or professional
B- Social class - middle class / type of job - Intermediate managerial, administrative or professional
C1- Social class - Lower middle class / type of job - Supervisory or clerical and junior managerial,          administrative or professional
C2- Social class - Skilled working class / type of job - Skilled manual workers
D- Social class - Working class / type of job - Semi and unskilled manual workers
E- Social class - Those at the lowest subsistence / type of job - casual or lowest grade workers, pensioners and others who depend of the government for their income.

Hypodermic needle theory/magic bullet
This theory says that the media can make the audience have a certain view on something by feeding them messages. The messages that are fed to the audience are ones which have a desired response. By saying bullet and needle represents that fact that the message is sent straight into the person without any thought. By saying that the media can influence people that much is suggesting that they are that powerful and that the media can have such an influence on people.

This theory was removed from 'The people's choice' because it was seen that this theory was not accurate. Methods such as the radio and Internet replaces this method.

My views on this theory is that the media did have an effect in people at a certain time until communication and other methods were produced. It is easy for anybody to be influenced by somebody or something if they sell or act right. If somebody popular or a public figure said something it is most likely that the 'fans' are going to believe this and share it on. By word of mouth people believe this information because of who it came from. I don't think this is as powerful nowadays but i do believe is used to be.

My using this method it shows that you are powerful and can influence people. This then assumes that the audience are powerless to reduce messages. Other people who are important and have a responsibility are:

  • Priminister
  • Queen
  • Headteachers/teachers
  • Newspapers
  • Radio
  • Police
  • Music industries
  • BBC/itv/Channel 4/ABC

NME Magazine Deconstruction

There are two pieces of text that grab the reader's attention when you first look at the magazine. The texts 'NME AND FLORENCE' stand out to the reader; with it standing out it tells you who the person is on the front of the magazine and what an article is about, as well the masthead of the magazine stands out by using a bigger size font and using capital letters. The main 2 colours of this front cover are black and white. With red being apart from the hair colour. As these are the only colours it gives the important information a chance to stand out, where as it may not have been as clear if it had more colours.
The front cover image is a close up, I feel that the image is a close up because of the colour of her hair which stands out to the reader and makes all of the rest of the writing stand out against the vibrant background. As Florence has red hair it stands out of the page and automatically attracts the attention of readers. Since the hair is so red it gives her other features a chance to stand out, such as her eyes. Her eyes are very white and then dark which makes them stand out as much as the text.

Some of the font is Sans Serif which makes the magazine look less formal; by the magazine looking more informal it makes it look more appealing to the audience. The other part of the font is Serif; this has been used for the quotes. By putting the quote in a different font it makes it look more important and interesting to the reader without thinking too much about it.

This magazine is a success because it doesn't go overboard on the colours; sticking to three colours as a rule is good because you can make something stand out and be vibrant without sticking pink and yellow on it. Since the magazine is not a pop one I would not expect lots of colour which have flowers all around because this magazine makes it look more professional and definitely intrigues the older audience.

The layout of this magazine has been done very well; by keeping important information of the side and neat it  make the magazine look more sophisticated. The good thing about this magazine is that they don't stick to the same layout; everyone is completely different in their own way and it works for all. By sticking to black, white and 'another colour' it makes it stand out without filling the page with unwanted colour, which in the end could make it look even worse.

Magazine deconstruction

This magazine catches your eye with all of the yellow from the font to the image. The masthead is eye catching for one because it is bold and in capital letters, but mostly because it has a smashed affect. As Kerrang's magazine has a rock audience the masthead works well with the craziness and 'hard' music that Kerrang publicises. A lot of the font is in Capital letters which makes the magazine look like what they are posting into their magazine is important and that they are not going for the 'normal' Capital letters which represent an important word or sentence.

Overall I like the look of this magazine, the colours and the layout works well with the genre of magazine. The name of the magazine is Rolling Stone. The colour scheme is blue, white and black. All of these colours work well together because of the blue. All of the important information has been highlighted into blue font, so the reader knows what are the important parts of the magazine. The image stands out and fits well with the colour scheme. As the picture has a few males and then a women the reader attention is firstly focused on the picture. Most of the font is in Capital letters, this shows that it is trying to get the reader to pay attention onto the writing because their main attention is on the other stuff that is going on, such as the masthead and image. I like the look of this magazine because it hasn't gone overboard on colours, the picture is not covered with colour which is good because it stands out itself without big amounts of bold colours.

Different research methods

Researching methods
Now that I am starting my main task I need to start researching. I have made some notes on different types of researching and their meanings. To start with, the four different types of researching are Primary, Secondary, Quantitative and Qualitative.

PrimaryThis is when you find out the relevant information out yourself, without using anybody else's research. The different forms of Primary research are:

  • Questionnaires
  • Surveys
  • Interviews
  • Focus group
  • Phone call
  • Letter
  • Email
  • Textual analysis
Secondary
This is the type of research that you get from somebody else. You can get this information from many places such as books. Here are examples of different secondary research:

  • Books
  • Internet
    - Search engine- Google, Bing, Yahoo etc.
    -Industries- BBC etc.
-Websites which have been made my individuals
  • Newspapers
  • Magazines
  • Journal
QuantitativeThis type of research is to do with numbers and patterns. If you had done a survey and had got an outcome of 4/5 then it would be Quantitative research. Some examples of Quantitative research are:

  • Questionnaires
    Positive
    -
You are the one who writes the questions, so you can have your questionnaire about what ever you want.
    Negative
    -
The people that you are giving the questionnaire to may not understand the questions and could get confused about what you are asking of them.
-Some questionnaires are long and that could be a reason for people to be put off because it could be time consuming for them and they don't want to spend a long time doing something that they may not be interested in.
    - The person with the questionnaire could make the people feel uncomfortable and from that the answers could be biased to what they believe the questionnaire person feels and not what they feel. This would make the questionnaire useless because there are not true answers.
  • Surveys
-A survey could make people uncomfortable because you could be putting them on the stop and they just say what ever because they don't want to stay in the same situation.
QualitativeThis method is to do with people's opinions and words. There are different ways that you can get Qualitative research such as:

  • Questionnaire
  • Focus group
  • Survey
  • Phone call
Anything where you are asking people their opinions/views on things then you need to make sure that you out them in a comfortable position.

These are the different types of research methods, i will be sure to use these and take them on board when making my magazine. To get the best research you need to sometimes look in places that you might not think about. Finding research from different methods such as Qualitative you might find out about something that you may not have if you used the Internet or books.

Final magazine

This is my final magazine and I am overall happy with the outcome. I was not sure about what I wanted and I didn't think much about my layout before hand but from trying different styles I am pleased with what I went for.

If I did this magazine again I would change the amount of colours that I have, as it would be better if I made the magazine out of two colours. On the other hand I do feel that because of the range of colours it has it's positives such as being inviting and a lot more child friendly.

I tried to stick with a certain font because I didn't want to fill the page with lots of different styles of writing. I felt that it would look less professional and would end up being a negative effect on the magazine.

As this is my first magazine I am happy with the layout and overall outcome. There are a few changes that I would make.
